Airbus Sets New Record with 2,094 Net Plane Orders in 2023
European planemaker Airbus surpasses expectations with 735 jet deliveries, despite supply chain challenges, as airlines prepare for increased passenger traffic.
Airbus, the European planemaker, announced on Thursday that it had achieved a record-breaking 2,094 net plane orders in the previous year. This achievement comes as airlines gear up for an anticipated increase in global passenger traffic and seek out more fuel-efficient aircraft. Despite ongoing supply chain challenges, the company managed to deliver 735 jets to its clients, surpassing its initial target of 720 deliveries.
The surge in new orders has surpassed Airbus's previous record set in 2013, when it received 1,503 plane orders. The company's success can be attributed to the popularity of its A320 family for shorter flights and the A350 for long-haul routes. Notable contracts were secured with major airlines such as India's IndiGo, which placed an order for 500 A320s, marking the largest civil aviation order in history. Additionally, Air India and Turkish Airlines ordered 250 and 230 planes, respectively. As a result, Airbus's overall order backlog reached 8,598 aircraft by the end of last year.
Looking ahead, Airbus has initiated the development of a successor to the A320 family, scheduled for the second half of the 2030s. Furthermore, the company aims to launch a hydrogen-powered plane by 2035, which would produce zero CO2 emissions.
In comparison, Airbus's US rival Boeing experienced a rise in net orders last year, reaching 1,314 aircraft, primarily for the 737 MAX and the long-haul 787s. However, Boeing faces renewed scrutiny following an incident on an Alaska Airlines jet, where a fuselage panel detached mid-flight, prompting an emergency landing.
Airbus's record-breaking performance in securing net plane orders and surpassing its delivery target underscores its position as a leading player in the aviation industry. The company's ambitious plans for future aircraft development and its commitment to sustainability further solidify its standing in the market. Buy a flight now!
