Dutch Airline Industry’s Sustainability Vision and Cathay Pacific's Sustainable Aviation Efforts
Learn about Cathay Pacific's progress towards sustainability and the Dutch airline industry's commitments for a cleaner, quieter, and stronger future.
Cathay Pacific, a leading airline in the Asia-Pacific region, has been making significant progress in its efforts to become a sustainability leader in the aviation industry. The company has been actively working towards decarbonizing its operations and has set a goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. In line with this commitment, Cathay Pacific recently launched its Corporate Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Programme in 2022 and has now welcomed three new partners to the programme.
The new partners include cargo customers Dimerco Express Group and Yusen Logistics, as well as the programme’s first non-governmental organization (NGO) partner, Business Environment Council. These partners have joined forces with Cathay Pacific to promote the wider adoption of renewable energy in the aviation industry, with the aim of reducing the carbon footprint of business travel and cargo shipments. They join the programme’s launch customers, including AIA, Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK), Kintetsu World Express (KWE), PwC China, Standard Chartered, and Swire Pacific, in their commitment to corporate climate action.
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is considered to be a crucial lever for decarbonizing airline operations in the coming decades, before alternatively powered aircraft can be widely deployed. Compared to conventional jet fuel, SAF can reduce over 80% of carbon emissions on a lifecycle basis, depending on the technology and feedstock used. Cathay Pacific has set a target of using 10% SAF for its total fuel consumption by 2030 and has already taken significant steps towards achieving this goal. The airline has uplifted SAF at various international airports and has been actively collaborating with fuel suppliers to drive the further development of the SAF supply chain.
In addition to increasing the use of SAF, Cathay Pacific’s carbon reduction roadmap includes fleet modernization, operational efficiency improvements, leveraging emerging technology breakthroughs, and high-quality carbon offset projects. The company is committed to driving sustainable practices across its operations and is dedicated to achieving its long-term sustainability goals.
In a separate development, various stakeholders in the Dutch airline industry have come together to present their vision for the future of the industry. With a focus on achieving a balance between environmental sustainability and the industry’s economic viability, the stakeholders have outlined ten concrete commitments aimed at making the Dutch airline industry cleaner, quieter, and stronger. These commitments include initiatives to reduce carbon emissions, improve connectivity, and promote sustainable aviation fuel.
The airline industry plays a crucial role in connecting people, economies, and cultures, and it is essential to find a balance that allows for continued growth while minimizing the industry’s impact on the environment. By working together to implement the action agenda, the stakeholders aim to create a sustainable and resilient airline industry that meets the needs of both the Dutch public and the global community.
Cathay Pacific’s efforts to promote sustainable aviation fuel and the collaborative vision for the future of the Dutch airline industry reflect a growing commitment to environmental sustainability within the aviation sector. These initiatives demonstrate a proactive approach towards addressing the environmental impact of air travel and are indicative of a broader shift towards sustainable practices in the industry.
