Potential industry but there are many challenges

Currently exporting 95% of production (mainly to European markets), Portuguese footwear manufacturers have also shifted to other regions in the past two years and are trying to gain momentum as a private label manufacturer and suppliers of national brands. Best luxury shoe brands such as Prada, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Adidas, and Paul Smith are using these companies to produce their footwear lines. Luís Onofre - president of APICCAPS, wants to take the industry one step further as part of the organizational goal to put ‘Made in Portugal' shoes on the map. Supporting local brands and their global expansion is also a priority. And this field seems to be growing to grow more. From 2010 to 2017, exports increased by more than 50%, reflecting the industry's efforts to strengthen the position of Portuguese footwear. The largest export markets of the industry are France, where they ship shoes worth 410 million euros in 2017, in addition to Germany (376 million euros), the Netherlands (281 million euros), Spain (174 million euros) and the United Kingdom (125 million euros) but Portugal is also seeking to enter new markets like the United States - the world's largest shoe importer. However, this sector showed signs of decline last year. Exports fell 2.85% in value to 1.90 billion euros although shipments increased to 85 million pairs and increased by 2.4%. This recession also affected only the Portuguese footwear industry with Italy and Spain. It may involve a general decline that threatens the global economy, according to Paulo Gonçalves, communications director at APICAAPS.
