Girls who have not yet reached puberty and women who reach menopause are most likely to experience LOW ESTROGEN.  However, women of all ages can experience LOW ESTROGEN.

This article will give information about symtoms, causes, risks, diagnose and treatment of LOW ESTROGEN.

Estrogen is a hormone.  Although present in the body in small amounts, this hormone plays a big role in maintaining your health.

Estrogen is usually associated with the female body.  Men also produce estrogen, but women produce it at a higher rate.

The estrogen hormones:

- Responsible for the sexual development of women through puberty

- Control the growth of the uterine lining during the menstrual cycle and when pregnancy begins

- Causes breast changes in teenagers and pregnant women

-  Involved in bone metabolism and cholesterol

- Regulates food intake, body weight, glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity

I. What are LOW ESTROGEN SYMPTOMS?

Girls who have not yet reached puberty and women who reach menopause are most likely to experience LOW ESTROGEN.  However, women of all ages can experience LOW ESTROGEN.

Common symptoms of low estrogen include:

- Having painful sex due to the lack of vaginal lubrication

- An increase in urinary tract infections (UTIs) due to thin urethra

- Menstruation is irregular or absent

- Mood swings

- A burning sensation, concentrated mainly in the neck and head, then spreads to the chest and usually lasts 30 seconds to 5 minutes

- Soft breasts

- Headaches or migraine aggravation

-  Sorrowful mood

- Difficulty concentrating

- Tired

You may also find that your bones are more prone to fracture or fracture.  This could be due to a decrease in bone density.  Estrogen works in combination with calcium, vitamin D and other minerals to keep bones strong.  If you have low estrogen levels, you may experience a decrease in bone density.

If left untreated, low estrogen can lead to infertility in women.

II. What cause LOW ESTROGEN?

Estrogen is mainly produced in the ovaries.  Anything that affects the ovaries affects estrogen production.

Young women may experience low estrogen levels due to:

- Excessive exercise

- An eating disorder, such as anorexia

- An active pituitary gland

- Premature ovarian failure may be caused by a genetic defect, a toxin or an autoimmune condition

- Turner syndrome

- Have chronic kidney disease

In women over 40, low estrogen can be a sign of menopause.  This transition period is known as perimenopause.

During perimenopause, your ovaries will still produce estrogen.  Production will continue to slow until you reach menopause.  When you no longer produce estrogen, you reach menopause.

III. Risk factors for LOW ESTROGEN

The most common risk factors for low estrogen levels include:

- Age, because your ovaries produce less estrogen over time

- Have a family history of hormonal problems, such as ovarian cysts

- Eating disorder

- Extreme diet

- Excessive exercise

- Problems with your pituitary gland

IV. How to diagnose LOW ESTROGEN?

Diagnosing low estrogen after treatment can prevent many health problems.

If you experience symptoms of LOW ESTROGEN, consult your doctor.  They can evaluate your symptoms and diagnose if needed.  Early diagnosis can help prevent further complications.

During your appointment, your doctor will discuss your family health history and evaluate your LOW ESTROGEN SYMPTOMS.  They will also do a physical exam.  Blood tests will likely be needed to measure your hormone levels.

Your estrone and estradiol levels may also be checked if you experience:

-  There is a burning sensation

- Night sweats

- Insomnia

- Frequent no periods (amenorrhea)

In some cases, your doctor may order a brain scan to check for any abnormalities that may affect the endocrine system.  DNA tests can also be used to evaluate any problems with your endocrine system.

V. How is LOW ESTROGEN treated?

Women with low estrogen levels may benefit from hormonal treatment.

1. Estrogen therapy

Women between the ages of 25 and 50 with an estrogen deficiency are often prescribed high doses of estrogen.  This can reduce the risk of bone loss, cardiovascular disease and other hormonal imbalances.

The actual dose will depend on the severity of the condition and the method of application.  Estrogen can be taken:

- By mouth

- For external use

- Through the vagina

- Injections

In some cases, long-term treatment may be needed even after your estrogen levels return to normal.  This may require low estrogen doses over time to maintain your current levels.

Estrogen therapy can also reduce the severity of menopausal symptoms and reduce the risk of fractures.

Long-term estrogen therapy is primarily recommended for women who are near menopause and who have also had a hysterectomy.  In all other cases, estrogen therapy is recommended for only one to two years.  This is because estrogen therapy can increase the risk of cancer.

2. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT)

HRT is used to increase your body's natural hormone levels.  Your doctor may recommend HRT if you are approaching menopause.  Menopause makes your estrogen and progesterone levels drop significantly.  HRT can help bring these levels back to normal.

During this therapy, hormones can be performed:

-  By mouth
- For external use
- Through the vagina
- Injections

HRT treatments can be adjusted for the dosage, duration and combination of hormones.  For example, depending on the diagnosis, progesterone is often used in combination with estrogen.

Women reaching menopause who experience HRT may increase their risk of cardiovascular disease.  Treatment has also been shown to increase the risk of blood clots, stroke and breast cancer.

3. Is there any relationship between low estrogen and weight gain?

Sex hormones, such as estrogen, affect the amount of fat in the body.  Estrogen regulates glucose and lipid metabolism.  If you have low estrogen levels you might be weight gained.

Research suggests this may be the reason why women reach menopause are more likely to become overweight.  Being overweight can increase the risk of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

If you have LOW ESTROGEN levels and it affects your weight, consult your doctor.  They can assess your symptoms and advise you on next steps.  It is always a good idea to eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly.  Talk to your doctor about developing a diet and exercise plan that is right for you.

Hormones, such as estrogen, play a key role in your overall health.  A genetic defect, a family history of a hormone imbalance or certain medical conditions can cause your low estrogen levels.

LOW ESTROGEN levels can interfere with sexual development and functions.  They can also increase the risk of obesity, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.

Treatments have evolved over the years and are becoming more and more effective.  Your specific cause for low estrogen will determine your specific treatment, as well as dosage and duration.
