A case in point is the story of a 33-year-old doctoral student from northwestern Germany who was forcibly evicted from his Berlin apartment by his landlord in the summer of 2022. In a desperate attempt to find a new place to live, he sent dozens of requests to real estate exchanges but found himself unable to secure a solution. Frustrated by the limited options, he attended house viewings where up to 50 people jostled for a chance to rent a small apartment. The experience of trying to find suitable housing in Berlin has become a highly stressful and daunting endeavor.
Recognizing the urgency and severity of the situation, the Berlin government has implemented measures to alleviate the pressure on people in need of rental housing.
