I. What is Progesterone?

Progesterone is a hormone secreted mainly in the second half of the menstrual cycle, and is one of the hormones that stimulate and regulate many bodily functions.  Progesterone produced from the ovaries, in addition to the placenta (during pregnancy) and the kidney glands, plays an important role in the menstrual cycle and maintaining pregnancy.

Progesterone is listed in the group of steroid hormones, called progestogen.  It is also an important intermediate metabolite in the production of other endogenous steroids, including sex hormones and natural steroids, which play a key role in brain function as a neurosteroid.

II.  The main role of progesterone

Progesterone plays an important role in helping to regulate the menstrual cycle in women and is primarily responsible for keeping the uterus ready for pregnancy.  After ovulation, progesterone causes the lining of the uterus (the lining of the uterus) to grow, changing into secretory form in preparation for fertilization of the egg cells.  If fertilization does not occur, progesterone deficiency level increases and you start menstruating.  If an egg fertilizes the uterine wall, progesterone helps maintain this endothelium throughout pregnancy.

Progesterone is also a hormone that is essential for breast development as well as milk production, it will further support estrogen function.  In addition, progesterone plays a very important role in the formation of testosterone, because it is a precursor to the adrenal hormone.

During ovulation (the second half of the menstrual cycle), a woman's body temperature usually rises between 0.5-1 degrees Celsius due to the effects of progesterone.

In pregnant women, progesterone is also considered a fertility hormone because it works to prevent uterine contractions, helping the mother's cervix always close.

- Effect on the implantation of the egg: After fertilization, the egg begins to move into the uterine lining to start the implantation process.  Previously, progesterone helped the uterine lining to develop and transform to facilitate the best reception of eggs.

After conception, progesterone is also produced in the placenta and maintained in high concentrations throughout pregnancy, so it will work to prevent premature birth and protect the normal development of the fetus.

- Progesterone also works to increase arterial blood and glycogen in the uterine lining to ensure nutrition for the fetus.

- Support the development of the mammary glands during pregnancy, play a role in milk production after giving birth.

- Creates the mucus of the mother's cervix to avoid bacterial invasion.

Progesterone for men is responsible for supporting sperm formation and development.  However, in men the concentration of progesterone in the body is very small.

III. Progesterone content

Concentration of serum progesterone fluctuates throughout the menstrual cycle, peaking 7 days before menstruation and higher in pregnant women.

During the follicular phase (before ovulation), progesterone concentrations remain low (0.2-1.5 ng / ml).  After the concentration of the hormone LH (luteinizing hormone) increases, peaks and leads to ovulation, the granulosa cells in the follicle will rupture, producing progesterone under the action of LH.

During the luteal phase (after ovulation), progesterone levels will rapidly increase to a maximum of 10-20 ng / ml in about 5-7 days after ovulation.

If the egg is not fertilized, conception does not occur, progesterone deficiency level will increase in the last 4 days of the cycle due to degeneration of the luteum.

If an egg is fertilized, the luteum keeps to increase progesterone level. Then, the placenta is the source of progesterone secretion, which increase progesterone levels from 10-50 ng / ml (in the first trimester) to 50-280 ng / ml (in the third trimester).

IV. Danger of progesterone deficiency

Progesterone is important for women of reproductive age.  If there is a progesterone deficiency, the thin uterine lining makes it difficult to conceive.  In a bad case, the implantation process of the egg can not happen, leading to infertility.

If pregnancy is normal, progesterone deficiency levels can also be a problem during fetal development.  At this time, the progesterone deficiency is big causing the uterine lining to not develop, the baby will be very narrow and cause a number of dangerous conditions such as vaginal bleeding, abnormally increased body pressure, or  miscarriage, stillbirth ...

Non-pregnant women with progesterone deficiency levels may experience uterine bleeding, missed periods or irregular menstrual cycles, difficulty conceiving, infertility.  Along with that, if the progesterone deficiency happens, it will lead to a hormonal imbalance.

V. Low Progesterone Symptoms

Low Progesterone Symptoms such as:

 - Light weight gain

- Impaired sexual desire function

- Psychological instability, stress, depression

-  Menstrual irregularities, premenopausal signs appear

- Chest tightness, fibrosis of the breast

 - There is a risk of uterine cancer, endometrium, fibroids, thyroid diseases.

VI.  Method to increase progesterone level in the body

When examining and testing the level of progesterone, your doctor will advise and provide appropriate solutions for you to increase progesterone hormone in the body.

This will increase your chances of having a healthy pregnancy and a full term pregnancy.  Hormone therapy also helps improve menstrual irregularities and bleeding irregularities.

For severe symptoms of menopause, you need to balance and regulate both estrogen and progesterone.  Hormone therapy may also help relieve low progesterone symptoms such as irritability, night sweats, and vaginal dryness, while also helping to improve mood in some women.  It also reduces the risk of osteoporosis and diabetes.

Progesterone is generally not supplemented in women who are experiencing menopausal symptoms of hormonal imbalances.  This is because menopause symptoms are mainly due to low estrogen level.

Hormone replacement has a number of risks, so it's important to discuss them with your doctor.  There are prescription drugs that are formulated to look like the body' natural hormones.  They are sometimes referred to as "biological hormones".  While these sounds more favorable, they have the same risks as other prescription formulations.
