In his general theory of relativity, Albert Einstein predicted the existence of deep holes, which connected two points in space or time.  However, up to now, we have not found any evidence to prove the existence of these holes.

Most recently, experts from the Central Astronomical Observatory in Russia believe that the 'black holes' at the centers of some very bright galaxies (known as active galactic nuclei or AGN) could be entrance to these deep holes.  This research has just been published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Society.

Basically, deep holes and black holes are very similar.  They are both extremely dense and possess extremely strong gravity.  However, they still have a few notable differences.  For example, nothing can exit a black hole after crossing its' event horizon ', while any object that enters the deep hole's mouth will theoretically reappear from its other mouth at somewhere else in the universe.

Researchers theorize that matter that enters one mouth of the deep hole may be able to collide with matter that enters another mouth of the deep hole at the same time.  This collision will create plasma balls of about 18 trillion degrees Fahrenheit that eject out of both mouths of the deep hole at the speed of light.

At such temperatures, the plasma will also produce gamma rays with energies of 68 million electronvolts, allowing some NASA observatories - such as the Fermi space telescope - to detect the explosion.

The researchers also suggested that, if they find something like AGN emitting spherical high-energy gamma rays, it might not be the AGN but the deep hole entrance.

"We currently know very little about the internal structure of the deep hole. We don't even know for sure if they even exist" The study author Mikhail Piotrovich told Motherboard.

The internal structure of the deep hole is still unknown / ph: NASA

If humans can travel to the core regions of these distant galaxies, we might find a potential way to travel in space, or even a way to travel through time.  But it should be added that the closest AGN is 13 million light years away.  Therefore, the possibility that people can access this AGN (not to mention the use of 'deep holes' for space travel) is considered impossible with the current technological platform.

Besides, although these deep holes are theoretically 'passable' (spacecraft can pass through them), they are surrounded by extremely high intensity radiation.  This means that it will be difficult for humans to survive in the journey through the deep hole, even if we apply the most stringent protection measures.
