Lab-grown meat could be on the menus of US restaurants in the next few months after a company in the industry received approval from the regulator.
Lab-grown meat is produced starting from a small sample of cells taken from livestock. This sample of cells is fed with nutrients in giant steel tanks called bioreactors and processed into a product that looks like real meat.
Ph: Upside Foods
Singapore is currently the only country to issue a retail license for lab-grown meat, and the US is ready to be the next country. Last November, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) certified chicken breast grown in the laboratory by Upside Foods food technology company as safe for consumption.
Upside Foods hopes to bring the product to restaurants by 2023 and to grocery stores by 2028. However, the company's lab-grown chicken breast product still need to be approved by the Food Safety and Inspection Department (FSIS) of the US Department of Agriculture inspects and certifies on the label.
GOOD Meat, a California-based lab-grown meat company, has also applied for safety certification and is awaiting FDA processing. Two other competitors, Mosa Meat (Netherlands) and Believer Meats (Israel), also said that they were negotiating with the FDA.
To date, the lab-grown meat sector has raised nearly $2 billion in investments globally, according to Good Food Institute (GFI) data. However, Tetrick says his company GOOD Meat alone will need hundreds of millions of dollars to build giant-sized bioreactors to produce lab-grown meat at large scale.
Until now, the investment capital poured into the industry has mainly come from venture capital firms and major food companies such as JBS, Tyson Foods and Archer-Daniels-Midland.
The European Union (EU) along with Israel and other countries are also working on regulatory frameworks for lab-grown meat but have not yet approved any products.
