Archaeologists have discovered the intact corpses of two men burned to death by the eruption of the Pompeii volcano in 79, Italy's Ministry of Culture said on Nov 21.

One of them is between the ages of 30 and 40 and may be of high status.  The man's body still bears the mark of a sweater under his neck, Reuters reported.

The second person, probably between 18 and 23 years old, was wearing a hood and had some collapsed vertebrae.  This shows that this man used to be a slave and had to work hard.

The bodies were found in Civita Giuliana, 700 meters northwest of downtown Pompeii.  They were found in an underground room in the area where a large mansion was being excavated.

The teeth and bones of these men are still intact.  Their soft tissue spaces were filled with plaster, which was then excavated to reveal body contours.

"These two victims were probably looking for shelter when they were swept through by volcanic debris around 9am," said Massimo Osanna, director of archaeological sites.  "They die from heat shock. This is also reflected in their clenched feet and hands."

Italy's Ministry of Culture Dario Franceschini said the finding underscores Pompeii's position as "an excellent place to study".

The ancient Roman's Pompeii city, 23 kilometers far from southeast of Naples, was inhabited by about 13,000 people when the volcano erupted.  The city was buried under ash, pumice and dust, leaving the ruins of the city and the bodies of the victims in a near-perfect condition.

This relic was only discovered in the 16th century. Organized excavations began around 1750. However, recently, attention has been directed to the bodies of the victims or the remains have emerged.
